The Government of Canada has an ongoing planning process for Royal Tours. The Government receives requests for visits from members of the Royal Family and from the provinces, territories, cities, and private organizations. These requests are then reviewed in the context of key Canadian celebrations or commemorations and reviewed with the members of The Royal Family and the Government of Canada. Provinces and territories are visited on a rotational basis to ensure a balance across the country. The Department of Canadian Heritage is responsible for the overall management of official Royal Tours in Canada.
What is the theme of the 2012 Royal Tour?
The 2012 Royal Tour is “For Queen and Country: Service to Canada—A Royal and a National Value.”
In this Diamond Jubilee Year, the Royal Tour of Canada will highlight service as both an enduring royal value of Her Majesty and the Royal Family as well as an intrinsic Canadian value. The service of the Queen and her family to Canada underscores the important bond between the Crown and this country and it is a central focus of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Of equal significance will be the focus on Canadians who have adopted service as an inherent value of our society and identity.
The Royal Tour will focus on this record of service and how it plays such a pivotal role in developing the fabric of this country and reinforcing our collective sense of identity. While taking time to honour the Queen in ways that are most meaningful to each of us in the communities where we live, Canadians should also take time to honour those around us who, through their service, bring credit to us all.
When was the last official Royal Tour to Canada?
The last official Royal Tour to Canada was in 2011, when The Duke and Duchess and Cambridge visited from June 30 to July 8. Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh toured Canada from June 28 to July 6, 2010. It was the 22nd official visit of Her Majesty as Queen of Canada.
